The new mare has finally arrived! I have named her Cheyenne, she is a terrific percheron, quarter horse cross. We've been riding her and working with her to try and get a feel for her personality and her training. Which she is great, there are a few kinks here and there but we all have our faults. This mare has made a terrific addition to the ranch horses and i am so excited to have her around for many more years to come. She has the size and disposition to get some serious work done around here. I am thinking of breeding her to Gunner to get a buckskin 1/4 draft 3/4 QH out of her, we shall see. I would like to have a strong sturdy horse with some draft in it to have around the
I know that it's not too uncommon for a good snowfall to come in May. But we have had a pretty mild winter thus far and with spring here, i would think that the majority of the snowfall is over. It has been snowing since yesterday and does not look like it is going to quite any time soon. I do appreciate the moisture and love the fact that this is giving the grasses a huge boost.
Yesterday early in the morning Peaches gave birth to a little sorrel filly. I named her Lilly, and have yet to set on a good papered name to register her with. She is adorable, and a real treat to have around after the winter we had. Luckily she came before this big snow storm that we have gotten, i have tucked mom and baby away in the barn until the snow lets up. You can see pics of her on the 2012 foals page. All of the other critters are loving the snow, the mares were out yesterday running and playing in the snow. And little Dixie, well let's just say she is more a fan of the warmer weather. She isn't so little anymore, in fact at 5 months she's just about as tall as her mom. We don't really know what breed she is, but i'm guessing monster. I will have al of these updates on the Facebook page for the ranch soon enough. Show season is upon us officially in Colorado and i am so excited to get back at it. The show horses are being conditioned and the newbies are learning the ropes. We are going to be at a local gymkhana next weekend, and a few shows the next few weekends after that. The trails this year are alot of fun with the minimal snowfall you can get higher on the mountains alot sooner than last year. The snow that just fel should melt fast, it's fairly warm outside, i may even head out in the middle of the week this week to get a good "no-tourist" ride in before the masses start to pack the trails. Updates will continue to foll Spring has sprung and so has the green green grasses. The horses certainly are loving all of the fresh grass coming up after the winter. They are looking good and getting ready for summer shows. This also means that it is time to really get after these colts and work them more. The two year olds sure let me know that they do not want any of it. Some of them are more than happy to work, but there is always that one colt that has to test your each and every button.
We still have one little one on the way, she should give birth any day now, after this long in the cooker it's going to be a big colt. I will be breeding three or four mares to Gunner this spring, all with great bloodlines and dispositions. One appaloosa mare, and three AQHA mares. The 2013 colts will have dynamite breeding and looks too. Gunner is going under saddle really well and i should be taking him out to shows this spring. I am still taking in breedings for him for this year, he is limited to a small number of outside mares this year. We are making big steps toward our move up to Wyoming, just a few things left to do. I will make sure to keep updates posted on here, and on the ranch facebook. There are big things happening around here lately. We are planning a huge expansion here in the upcoming months. And a big move, i am packing everyone up and heading for the hills. The business is doing really well and i am expanding to a larger property and more barns.....
With the proposed expansion Slash Bar A Ranch will be branching out into a few new industries. We are headed to a large operation in Wyoming here in the next few months. So I better hold of on buying anymore horses until May! We'll see how long that lasts. We are expecting Peaches foal any day now, i hope its a colt, but everyone else wants a filly. We'll see what she has, she is due April 12th and in foal to Sonitalena. This will be one heck of a cutting prospect. Check back for pics of the little tike when he/she finally arrives. |
